Financial Planners

Financial Planners assist people in the management of their finances and offer various services such as personal budgeting, debt management and retirement and tax planning. Financial planners are not currently subject to provincial registration or regulation in British Columbia.

Council believes that life insurance agents who hold themselves out as financial planners should be required to meet minimum standards and be required to disclose their financial planning qualifications to a client. Therefore, if licensed with Council, a life insurance agent must meet certain education or experience requirements in order to represent themselves as a Financial Panner, Advisor or Consultant; or otherwise represent themselves as providing financial planning advice. Council also requires the agent to disclose his or her qualifications to you. The Notice issued to our agents on this issue is available for you to read, should you so wish (Financial Planning Notice).
