Finding an Insurance Agent

Word of mouth is always helpful in identifying capable insurance agents. Ask for recommendations from people whose judgment you trust, such as your accountant, lawyer, family or friends. Your local Yellow Pages will provide names of insurance agents in your area. Council does not provide a referral service.

You need to feel comfortable talking with your agent, however, the agent’s insurance knowledge is of primary importance. If you have little knowledge about insurance, consider doing some research.

When interviewing a prospective agent, ask plenty of questions, including requesting information about the person's background. What is his or her experience with people in your circumstances? How many insurance companies do they represent?

Insurance, regardless of whether you are buying or changing, is a big investment and can be complicated. An agent should be happy to take time to explain everything in as much detail as you wish. Remember, you are the decision maker. Do not allow yourself to be pressured into something you are not comfortable with. Take the time you need to review the information you have been given.

Once you find an agent you are considering working with, you can ensure he or she is licensed by checking the name on our website under SEARCH LICENSEES.

While the above is aimed at finding an insurance agent, a consumer looking for a public adjuster should follow the same process.
