A Message from the Chair

From Lesley Maddison, 2019-2020 Chair of the Insurance Council of BC.

Dear colleagues,

The global outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19) has led to a great deal of change and disruption in the lives of British Columbians, and the Insurance Council of BC and its licensees are no exception.

The health and safety of the public, our licensees, and our staff is our priority.  At this time, we are continuing to carry out our regulatory functions while abiding by the guidance of BC’s Provincial Health Officer. Insurance services have been declared an essential service by the BC government, and we believe that we can best serve British Columbians by continuing to carry out our regulatory work in support of insurance licensees’ efforts to keep BC’s economy moving forward.

The Insurance Council has taken a number of measures at this time to continue to provide services and carry out our regulatory functions, mindful that it is not ‘business as usual.’ As our office closed to the public, we took steps to move many of our processes online and continue to conduct business by phone and email to ensure licensees have access to the services and support they need.

To comply with the Provincial Health Officer's orders regarding physical distancing and limiting the size of gatherings, we cancelled LLQP exams, and we are currently working on solutions to enable life licence qualification. We also worked with the Minister of Finance to bring in an urgent temporary rule change to suspend location restrictions for Level 1 salespersons, to help enable these licensees to work while self-isolating, and thus support the public’s access to insurance products at this time. We have also extended the deadline for licensees to fulfil their 2020 Continuing Education credit requirements by a year.

We continue to monitor the situation as we move forward, and will adapt as necessary as the situation unfolds.

Throughout BC, insurance licensees are doing their part to continue serving the public’s needs. On behalf of the Insurance Council, I thank you for the important work you are doing and for your understanding during these extraordinary times.

Take care and be safe.
