Updated Continuing Education Guidelines coming June 1
Published May 13, 2025
Under
Council Rule 7(5), insurance licensees must meet the requirements of the Insurance Council's continuing education (CE) program. Revisions to the CE program guidelines for BC adjusters and general, life, and accident & sickness insurance licensees were approved by Council at its April 2025 meeting. These changes will be reflected in a revised document for each licence class, titled the
Continuing Education Requirements and Guidelines (formerly referred to as the
Continuing Education Guidelines), which will take effect on
June 1, 2025. There is no change to the current CE guidelines for travel agency employees/salespersons.
The
updates to the CE program in the
Continuing Education Requirements and Guidelines outline new technical content categories, expand on eligibility criteria, and offer additional explanation to support licensees in meeting their obligations. Additionally, new licensees will no longer need to complete CE for their licence period. There is no change to the amount of CE credits required by licensees annually after the first licence period.
For the licence period starting in June 2025, licensees will need to meet these updated CE requirements by May 31, 2026, in order to meet ongoing requirements and renew their licence.
Guidelines publication to be accompanied by additional resources
The Continuing Education Requirements and Guidelines will be published on the Insurance Council website at the beginning of June. A practice advisory email will be sent to licensees, providing links to resources and educational opportunities to support licensee understanding of the CE requirements, such as:
- Live and recorded webinars
- An explanatory video
- A Q&A.
About the revisions
CE is learning that helps fulfill the knowledge required to maintain a standard of professional competence and remain current amidst industry changes.
The Insurance Council regularly evaluates and revises guidance documents to ensure they remain relevant and provide the necessary clarity to licensees. Draft versions of the revised
Continuing Education Requirements and Guidelines for adjusters and general, life and accident & sickness insurance licensees were
made available for public comment in February and March 2025. The feedback received was considered prior to finalizing the document, which was then reviewed and approved by voting Council.
