Updated course requirement for General Insurance Level 3

Published April 4, 2024

The Insurance Council has developed a Supervision Course for General Insurance Agents, available starting in July 2024. This online course reflects changes made to general insurance agent level 3 licence qualifications earlier in April, and addresses supervisor and supervisee roles and conduct requirements, supervision requirements and expectations, considerations for supervisors and best practices. Completion of the course satisfies one of the prerequisites to apply for a level 3 licence.
Updated course requirement for new licence applications and upgrades to Level 3
Currently, individuals applying for a general insurance agent Level 3 licence are required to complete the Duties & Responsibilities for Level 3 Agents and Nominees in British Columbia seminar offered by the Insurance Brokers Association of BC (IBABC) as a prerequisite.

Until September 30, 2024, either the Insurance Council course or the IBABC course will be accepted as a prerequisite for Level 3 general insurance licensure. After that date, only the Insurance Council’s Supervision Course for General Insurance Agents may be taken to meet part of the qualification requirements.

Individuals who completed the IBABC course towards Level 3 licence qualification, will need to submit a complete licence application by September 30, 2024, for the course to count.
More about the course and where to find it
The Supervision Course for General Insurance Agents is an online course accessible via the Insurance Council website. The course is $100 and registration is available by logging into your online portal account.
Although level 2 and existing level 3 general insurance agent licensees are not required to take the course, they are encouraged to do so as it will provide an overview of supervision expectations and is eligible for 2 CE credits.
