Temporary adjuster licence for emergency response

Published July 8, 2025

With the unpredictable nature of shifting weather and increasing occurrences of wildfire during the summer season, the Insurance Council issues expedited temporary adjuster licences to respond to emergency situations in BC. This existing program works with licensed out-of-province adjusters to provide additional assistance following a catastrophic event.

The Insurance Council activates its Temporary Adjuster Licence Policy when the Province of British Columbia declares a state of emergency related to a catastrophic event, at which point temporary adjuster licence applications will be accepted.

The temporary insurance adjuster licence waives requirements for completion of the Council Rules Course and a criminal record check, and is valid for a period of three months to adjust the named catastrophic event. A simplified adjuster application form will be made available at that time to support faster processing; completed temporary insurance adjuster licence applications take one business day to process.

Applications for the temporary licence can be submitted via online form or email and must identify the catastrophic event the temporary licensee will be adjusting.

In the event that the provincial government has not declared a state of emergency and temporary adjuster licence applications have not been activated, and you are seeking to have an application expedited due to a catastrophic event, please contact the Licensing Department.

Temporary Licence Requirements

To qualify for licensure, applicants must:

  • Be licensed in their home jurisdiction

  • Be authorized to represent a licensed adjusting firm in BC
  • Satisfy all suitability checks, including suitability issues with other regulators and checks for money laundering and terrorist affiliations.
Temporary licensees remain accountable to understand and comply with the Insurance Council's Rules and Code of Conduct.
